What was discovered
A large, permanent spot on Jupiter, used by Cassini to measure the planet's rotation (about 10 hours). It is the longest-lived anticyclonic storm known.
It is not certain that Cassini's spot (observed until 1713) is the same one recorded since 1831.
What it led to
- Measurement of the rotation of the giant planets
- Planetary meteorology
