What it is
A reform of French artillery with standardised calibres, lighter guns, carriages with elevating screws and interchangeable parts. It made artillery mobile and uniform in quality, a pillar of Napoleon's campaigns.
The models were approved around 1765; Gribeauval was partly inspired by the Austrian systems he saw during the Seven Years' War; the influence on interchangeable production (Honoré Blanc) is debated.
What it led to
- Napoleonic field artillery
- interchangeable parts, a precursor of mass production
- fire concentration doctrines
