What it is
A process that breaks a photograph into dots of varying size using a screen, allowing it to be printed with ink alongside text. It was the basis of photographs in newspapers and books.
Frederic Ives patented a screen in Philadelphia (1881) and Meisenbach another in Munich (1882); Stephen Horgan earlier published (1880) a halftone image in the New York Daily Graphic.
