What it is
A niobium-tin (Nb3Sn) wire carried hundreds of thousands of amps per cm² in magnetic fields above 8 teslas. It showed that superconductors could make powerful, lossless electromagnets.
What it led to
- MRI and accelerator magnets (LHC, using Nb-Ti)
- superconducting tokamaks (KSTAR, ITER)
- superconducting levitation trains
