What was discovered

A replica double-hulled canoe sailed from Hawaii to Tahiti guided only by stars, swells and birds. It refuted the theory that Polynesia was settled by accidental drift.

Mau Piailug, from Satawal (Micronesia), was one of the last masters of traditional navigation.

What it led to

  • a revival of traditional Pacific navigation
  • academic recognition of intentional Polynesian voyaging
  • the round-the-world voyage of the Hōkūleʻa (2014-2017)
