What it is
Dipping iron into molten zinc to protect it from corrosion. It made corrugated sheet, hardware and wire durable when exposed to the elements.
The name alludes to Galvani because of the electrochemical explanation; Sorel patented it in France (1837) and Craufurd in England the same year.
What it led to
- Galvanised corrugated sheet in colonies, mines and gold rushes
- Cheap buckets, roofing and tanks
- Barbed wire and fencing on the Great Plains
