What it is
An improvement on the Solvay process that combines soda ash manufacture with ammonia production and recovers the chlorine as ammonium chloride, useful as a fertiliser, instead of discarding it. It makes use of almost all the salt.
Developed during the war with Japan after moving the Tianjin plant to Sichuan; industrialised in the 1960s.
What it led to
- Chinese production of soda ash and nitrogen fertilisers
- reduction of calcium chloride waste
