What it is
A technology park opened in December 1980 beside two universities and the ITRI institute, bringing together semiconductor workshops, computer makers and venture capital. It was the cradle of TSMC, UMC and much of Taiwan's electronics industry.
It was inspired by places such as Silicon Valley and Tsukuba Science City. The date is that of the formal opening (15 December 1980).
What it led to
- a model of science park for East Asia
- TSMC and UMC as spin-offs from ITRI
- Taiwan's ecosystem of computer and chip companies
