What it is
Lou Montulli devised at Netscape a mechanism for servers to store small pieces of data in the user's browser, solving the problem of maintaining state (such as a shopping cart) in the HTTP protocol, which has no memory between requests.
Montulli and John Giannandrea wrote the first specification in 1994; Netscape Navigator 0.9beta (October 1994) was the first browser to support cookies.
What it led to
- user sessions and shopping carts in e-commerce
- web tracking and advertising profiling
- privacy regulations, such as the European GDPR, on cookie use
