What it is
The Benedictine monk built at the Győr school a motor with stator, rotor and commutator, both parts electromagnetic. It is among the first machines to combine the three elements of a practical DC motor.
Jedlik did not publish his motor until decades later, so the exact date and its influence are debated; the 1828 apparatus is kept at the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest. Other pioneers (Jacobi, 1834; Davenport, 1834) did so with immediate diffusion.
What it led to
- teaching models of electric motors in physics education
- the Hungarian priority claim for the commutated electric motor
- his later self-excitation principle for dynamos
