What was discovered

An English expedition from Bristol that reached the North American coast by the northern Atlantic route and explored part of its waters and shores. It opened the Grand Banks fisheries of Newfoundland to England.

The exact landfall (Newfoundland, Cape Breton or Labrador) is disputed and his logs do not survive; the 1498 voyage vanished. It came long after the Norse arrival around 1000.

What it led to

  • cod fisheries on the Grand Banks
  • the basis of English claims in North America
