What it is
Douglas Crockford specified and popularized JSON, a lightweight data-interchange format based on a subset of JavaScript object syntax, conceived as a simple alternative to XML for exchanging data between server and browser.
Crockford popularized it from his company State Software in 2001 and registered the json.org domain that same year, though he himself notes he did not 'invent' it but described a notation that was already used informally.
What it led to
- adoption as the de facto format for web APIs
- simplification of interactive application development (AJAX)
- later standardization as ECMA-404 and ISO/IEC 21778
