What was discovered
Julia published in Paris a study on the iteration of complex rational functions defining the sets that bear his name: fractal boundaries where minimal perturbations produce chaotic behavior. Fatou had published parallel results in 1917.
Julia carried out much of this work while recovering from wounds suffered in the First World War.
What it led to
- Foundation of modern complex dynamics
- The Mandelbrot set (decades later, with the help of computers)
- Popularization of computer-generated fractal imagery
