What it is
A screw steam corvette built in the Netherlands in 1857 in which a Japanese crew crossed the Pacific to San Francisco in 1860, accompanying the embassy for the friendship treaty with the United States.
Brooke's American sailors helped through the voyage's storms; command was Japanese (Kimura and Katsu), although how much depended on that help is debated.
What it led to
- Japan's modern navy and the Nagasaki naval school
- first Pacific crossing by a Japanese steam crew
- Japan's opening to Western technical exchange
