What was discovered
An exact solution of Einstein's field equations describing the geometry of empty spacetime around a rotating, uncharged, axially symmetric black hole.
Found by New Zealand mathematician Roy Kerr; Einstein's equations are highly non-linear, making exact solutions very hard to find.
What it led to
- Realistic models of rotating astrophysical black holes
- A basis for studying accretion disks and relativistic jets
