What it is
At Edison's laboratory, Dickson developed an individual viewer that passed perforated film in front of a light source with a high-speed shutter, creating the illusion of movement for a single viewer looking through a peephole. It drew on Muybridge's zoopraxiscope, Marey's chronophotographic gun and Eastman's flexible film, and the need to project to larger audiences spurred the Vitascope and the Lumières' Cinématographe.
