What was discovered
As an exercise for the mathematical-physics seminar at Königsberg, the student Kirchhoff formulates two conservation laws —of current at each node and of voltage around each loop— that allow any electrical circuit, however complex, to be solved.
What it led to
- Systematic analysis of electrical networks
- Theoretical basis of electrical and electronic engineering
- Kirchhoff's doctoral thesis at Königsberg (1847)
