What was discovered
Sparse clouds of cosmic dust that accompany the Moon at the Earth-Moon system's L4 and L5 Lagrange points; extremely hard to observe, their existence was controversial for decades.
First spotted by Kordylewski in 1961 from the Tatra Mountains; later observations gave contradictory results and their existence was only tentatively confirmed in 2018.
What it led to
- Studies of interplanetary dust at libration points
- Tentative confirmation via polarimetry in 2018
