What it is
A bulb filled with krypton instead of argon, which reduces filament evaporation and allows a higher temperature and more light per watt. Krypton was obtained as a by-product of liquid air.
Bródy developed it at the Tungsram research laboratory with Emil Theisz, Ferenc Kőrösy and Tivadar Millner, and Michael Polanyi contributed to the manufacturing technology. He died in 1944 in a labour camp.
What it led to
- more efficient, longer-lived lamps
- the Hungarian Tungsram lamp industry
- applications of krypton in lighting
