⚠️ Disputed: the sources disagree.

What it is

A public elevator about 72 m high linking the lower town (port) and upper town of Salvador, Bahia. It opened in 1873 with hydraulic drive, was electrified in 1906 and was renovated in Art Deco style in 1930.

Built between 1869 and 1873. The claim that it is the world's first urban elevator comes from local tradition and is unproven.

What it led to

  • vertical public transport between districts of cities on cliffs
  • an urban landmark of Salvador and of its heritage
