What it is

A conic map projection that preserves angles (conformal), projecting the Earth onto a cone with one or two standard parallels. Widely used for aeronautical charts and regional coordinate systems for its low distortion across mid-latitude bands.

One of seven projections published by Lambert in 1772 in 'Anmerkungen und Zusätze zur Entwerfung der Land- und Himmelscharten'.

What it led to

  • modern aeronautical navigation charts
  • US State Plane Coordinate Systems
  • other derived conic projections for regional mapping
