What it is
For their IPL (Information Processing Language) and the Logic Theorist program, Newell, Shaw and Simon devised a data structure where each node links to the next, allowing insertion and deletion of elements without contiguous memory. It became the foundation of list-processing languages such as LISP.
What it led to
- LISP (1958) and list-processing languages
- Stacks, queues and associative arrays as abstract data types
- Process and thread management in operating systems
