What it is
Lippmann proposes capturing a scene through an array of tiny lenses that records light from many viewpoints, to reproduce it in relief without glasses. It is the basis of integral imaging and the plenoptic camera.
Lippmann obtained only crude images for lack of means; the idea was taken up with microlens arrays and sensors in the 21st century.
What it led to
- lenticular and glasses-free stereoscopic displays
- light-field (plenoptic) cameras
- integral imaging in 3D displays
