What it is
Lister finds that certain separations of two achromatic lenses correct spherical and chromatic aberration at once, and designs objectives on that principle. It turned the compound microscope into a reliable scientific instrument.
Amici was by then building achromatic objectives in Modena (1827) with different ideas; Lister's contribution was published in 1830 in the Philosophical Transactions.
