What it is
French surgeon Jean Civiale performed the first lithotripsy in Paris in 1824: he introduced through the urethra the lithotrite, a three-armed instrument that grasped a bladder stone and drilled and crushed it from within, avoiding the open incision of traditional lithotomy.
Wikidata attributed the invention to "François Fournier de Lempdes", a person undocumented in the history of lithotripsy; the invention is credited to French surgeon Jean Civiale, regarded as the father of modern lithotripsy.
What it led to
- Litholapaxy and urological endoscopy
- Decline of open lithotomy
- Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy
