⚠️ Disputed: the sources disagree.
What it is
Lodygin sealed a carbon rod in a glass bulb, first evacuated and later filled with nitrogen, and made it glow. He obtained a Russian patent in 1874 and was one of the forerunners of the Edison and Swan bulb.
There were dozens of precursors (Goebel, Swan, De Changy); priority for the practical bulb is still disputed and Russian chroniclers claim it for Lodygin.
What it led to
- public demonstration of incandescent lighting in Saint Petersburg
- metal-filament lamps: Lodygin proposed tungsten and molybdenum around 1890
- competition with Edison and Swan
