What was discovered
Lorentz formulated the equations relating space and time between observers moving at constant velocity relative to each other, keeping the speed of light constant, to rescue the aether hypothesis in the face of the Michelson-Morley experiment.
Lorentz derived them to preserve the aether; Einstein would reach the same equations a year later without needing it.
