What was discovered
Scheele recognised pyrolusite as the oxide of a new metal, and Gahn isolated it by reducing it with charcoal.
Ignatius Kaim is said to have obtained impure manganese in 1770.
What it led to
- Manganese steels (Hadfield steel)
- Manganese dioxide dry cells
- Permanganate as an oxidant and disinfectant
Built on
- Pyrolusite used in glass
- Carbon reduction (smelting with carbon)
