What it is
A method computing an astral body's altitude and azimuth from an assumed position and plotting the difference from the measured altitude on the chart. The resulting line of position gives the ship's fix with two or more bodies.
What it led to
- practical celestial navigation with altitude-azimuth tables
- fixes from three stars at dawn and dusk
- the standard procedure until GPS
