What it is

With Kelsey he formulated structural calculation with matrices and energy theorems, suited to the computer. It is one of the foundations of the finite element method in aeronautical engineering.

The paternity of the finite element method is shared among Argyris (London), Turner, Clough and Topp (Boeing, 1956) and earlier Hrennikoff and Courant. This entry is limited to Argyris and Kelsey's matrix formulation (1954-1955). Argyris was born in Volos (Greece) and later worked in Stuttgart.

What it led to

  • computer structural analysis in the aerospace industry
  • finite element software
