What it is
An instrument that measures very low vacuum pressures by compressing a gas sample in a mercury capillary tube and calculating the original pressure from the volume reduction, devised by Herbert McLeod.
What it led to
- a standard for calibrating other vacuum gauges for a century
- essential to the vacuum industry and freeze-drying
- gradually replaced by electronic gauges in the 20th century
