What it is
Circular particle accelerator derived from the cyclotron, using a linear accelerator structure to increase electrons' kinetic energy in constant increments per turn, devised by Vladimir Veksler at the Lebedev Physical Institute.
What it led to
- Associated discovery of the phase stability principle, the basis of modern cyclic accelerators
- Construction of the first Soviet synchrotron (C-3, 1947) under Veksler's direction
- Independent rediscovery of the same principle by Edwin McMillan in the United States
