What it is
Bose generated and detected waves from 5 mm to 25 mm using waveguides, horns, dielectric lenses and polarisers, and created a galena contact detector that he patented in 1904. He was a pioneer of microwave radiation and semiconductor detectors.
His 1904 US patent is considered the first for a semiconductor device; it is debated whether the mercury coherer used by Marconi in 1901 was inspired by one of Bose's.
What it led to
- 'cat's whisker' detector of early crystal radios
- microwave optics and millimetre-wave radio astronomy
