What was discovered
In a lecture delivered in Cologne in 1908 titled 'Space and Time', Hermann Minkowski proposed unifying space and time into a single four-dimensional geometric continuum, providing the natural mathematical framework for Einstein's special theory of relativity.
Minkowski had been Einstein's mathematics professor in Zurich; his famous opening line was: 'Henceforth, space by itself and time by itself are doomed to fade away into mere shadows'.
What it led to
- the standard geometric formulation of special relativity
- the concepts of world line and light cone
- the mathematical basis Einstein later reused in general relativity
