What was discovered
Sharp, detectable spike in the production of cosmogenic isotopes (carbon-14, beryllium-10, chlorine-36) caused by an extreme solar storm, first identified by Fusa Miyake in the rings of a 1,900-year-old Japanese cedar.
What it led to
- New absolute-dating tool (a "year-stamp") for archaeology and history
- Evidence of solar storms far more intense than any recorded in the modern era
- Warning about the risk a similar event would pose to today's technological infrastructure
