What it is
A deck supported by a few straight cables run from pylons that hold it in tension, with a 182 m main span. With less cable than a suspension bridge, it is stiffer and simpler to erect by cantilever.
There were earlier proposals (Löscher, 1784; Poyet, 1821) and 19th-century bridges that failed; Strömsund is the first modern one with steel cables and Dischinger's analysis.
What it led to
- bridges with spans between 200 and 1,100 m, such as Millau and Russky
- cantilever erection with successive cables
- slender decks with fan or harp cable arrangements
