What it is
Nineteen basalt pillars that, according to their discoverers, point to stars used in the 354-day Borana calendar. It would be a prehistoric calendrical observatory of East Africa.
Proposed by Lynch and Robbins (Science, 1978); Soper (1982) and others questioned the dating and the alignments. It is included as a hypothesis, not as fact.
What it led to
- study of the Borana calendar as an astronomical system
- African archaeoastronomy
- debate over pastoral calendars
