What it is
Accumulators with a potash alkaline electrolyte and nickel plates with cadmium or iron, long-lived and abuse-tolerant. Jungner patented them in 1899 and Edison developed them for vehicles and mines.
Jungner patented nickel-iron and nickel-cadmium in 1899; Edison filed his nickel-iron patent in 1901, with a priority dispute. Many Edison batteries still work a century later.
What it led to
- portable rechargeable nickel-cadmium cells
- nickel-iron batteries in mines, trams and railway signalling
- the nickel-metal hydride battery (1980s)
