What was discovered
Bartlett reacts xenon with platinum hexafluoride and obtains a solid, showing that the 'inert' gases form compounds. XeF2, XeF4 and XeF6 are obtained shortly afterwards. It breaks a dogma of bonding chemistry.
Pauling had predicted xenon compounds in 1933.
What it led to
- Chemistry of fluorine and extreme oxidants
- Revision of the octet rule
- Xenon chemistry in materials and excimer lasers
Built on
- Ramsay's noble gases
- platinum fluoride chemistry
Made possible
- Covalent electron-pair bond and octet rule (Lewis)1916
- XeCl and XeF excimer lasers
- fluorinating agents
