What was discovered
Book that showed by calculation that a multistage liquid-fuel rocket could leave the atmosphere, and proposed space stations and crewed flights. Its circulation triggered the spaceflight-society movement in Germany.
Oberth, born in Romanian Transylvania, wrote the work after Heidelberg rejected his thesis; it was published in Munich (Oldenbourg). The place given is that of publication, not of writing.
What it led to
- founding of the Verein für Raumschiffahrt (1927) and amateur rocket groups
- training of Wernher von Braun and the Peenemünde team
- the Oberth effect: gaining energy by burning close to a massive body
