What was discovered
First atom detected in 2002 by fusing calcium-48 with californium-249; published in 2006 and named in 2016 after Oganessian, the second living person to be so honoured.
Heaviest known element; only about five atoms observed.
What it led to
- Closing of the seventh row of the periodic table
- Prediction that it would be a semiconducting solid, not a noble gas
- Impetus for the search for elements 119 and 120
Built on
- Californium1950
- Ca-48 method
Made possible
- Superheavy Element Factory (SHE Factory, 2019)
