What it is

A centre founded by the disciples of Cyril and Methodius after their expulsion from Moravia, where clergy were trained in Slavic and texts were copied and translated. It sustained the Glagolitic tradition and the Slavic liturgy in the First Bulgarian Empire.

The 886 foundation rests on hagiographic sources (Life of Clement). Calling it a 'university' is a later label; the figure of about 3,500 pupils also comes from hagiographic tradition.

What it led to

  • training of thousands of clerics and of an ecclesiastical Slavic literature
  • continuity of the Glagolitic tradition in the south-west Slavic world
