What it is
A light, portable petrol engine clamped to the transom of a small boat, driving and steering it as it is swivelled. Evinrude's was the first commercially successful one.
Cameron Waterman built an outboard ('Porto') around 1905 and marketed it; Evinrude's (1909-1911) is the one that popularised it.
