What it is

A 64 m steerable-dish radio telescope opened in 1961, for decades the largest in the southern hemisphere. It detected pulsars and fast radio bursts and received signals from Apollo 11.

In 1962 a lunar occultation observed at Parkes pinned down the position of 3C 273, which allowed the first quasar to be identified in 1963.

What it led to

  • discovery of hundreds of pulsars and the first fast radio bursts
  • southern radio astronomy and spacecraft-tracking networks
  • the lunar occultation that fixed the position of 3C 273
