What it is
Royal garden irrigated by stone channels that divide it geometrically, a forerunner of the chahar bagh. The Avestan term pairidaeza (enclosed precinct) gave the Greek paradeisos, 'paradise'.
The strict four-part structure at Pasargadae was proposed by D. Stronach; some specialists believe the cross-shaped scheme is later and that Cyrus's garden was more irregular.
What it led to
- model for the Islamic garden (chahar bagh) from Isfahan to the Alhambra and the Taj Mahal
- concept of paradise as an enclosed garden
- ornamental irrigation engineering
