What it is
Shells of Tritia gibbosula perforated and worn by suspension, carried far inland. They are the oldest evidence of identity expressed through the body.
Skhul and Qafzeh (Israel, c. 100 ka), Blombos (75 ka) and Grotte des Pigeons (82 ka) show later dates; Neanderthals used eagle talons (Krapina, 130 ka) independently.
