What it is
Plateau built a disc with sequential drawings and radial slits that, when spun in front of a mirror and viewed through the slits, created the illusion of an animated image, exploiting persistence of vision. He published his finding in January 1833, almost simultaneously with Austrian Simon von Stampfer's independent invention of an equivalent device, the stroboscope.
Plateau acknowledged that Stampfer had reached the same idea independently and almost simultaneously; Stampfer patented his version first, in May 1833.
