What it is
The Phong reflection model is an empirical model of local illumination in computer graphics, estimating how a surface reflects light by combining ambient, diffuse and specular components. It was developed by researcher Bui Tuong Phong in his 1973 doctoral dissertation at the University of Utah and published in 1975.
What it led to
- Phong shading as a standard interpolation technique in 3D graphics
- Basis of lighting models in graphics engines and video games
- Influence on the development of programmable shaders
