What it is
A technique for obtaining measurements and plans of terrain from photographs taken from known points. Laussedat began with camera lucida drawings in 1849 and moved on to photography from kites and balloons.
The term "photogrammetry" was coined by Meydenbauer (1867), who applied the technique to architecture from 1858; priority between the two is nuanced.
What it led to
- mapping from aerial photography
- the basis of topographic surveys by air and of remote sensing
