What was discovered
A vast filamentary complex of galaxy superclusters, hundreds of megaparsecs across, that includes the Virgo Supercluster (and thus the Milky Way) as an outlying member. Tully identified it by mapping the distribution of nearby galaxies.
Identified from redshift catalogues of nearby galaxies; in 2014 it was recognised as part of the larger Laniakea structure.
What it led to
- large-scale maps of the universe's filamentary structure
- later recognition that it forms part of the Laniakea Supercluster
- redshift-survey methods for mapping superclusters
